What is the Kiona Foundation Financial Assistance Program?
It is the Foundation's program of direct financial assistance. It helps people in active treatment with documented hardships that affect access to care. Assistance is application-based and is not guaranteed.
Who may apply for financial assistance?
The program serves people in the United States who are in active treatment. A parent, guardian, or caregiver may request an application on behalf of a person in active treatment.
What can financial assistance help cover?
Assistance may help with rent or mortgage, utilities, food and nutrition, transportation related to care, and other documented hardships affecting access to care. Approved assistance may be paid directly to a landlord, utility, or other provider.
Does the program pay medical bills?
No. The program does not pay medical bills. For help with a medical bill, ask the hospital or treatment provider about its financial assistance policy. Many hospitals, including tax-exempt hospitals, maintain one.
How much financial assistance may an applicant receive?
The Foundation does not publish minimum or maximum award amounts. Each request is considered on its documented need and on the funds available.
How often are financial assistance applications reviewed?
Applications are reviewed monthly, based on the availability of grant funds. Review does not guarantee approval, payment, or a decision in any particular month.
What documents are required for financial assistance?
Applicants may be asked for proof of identity and residence, confirmation of active treatment, proof of household income or hardship, and the bill or statement related to the request. The Foundation provides secure instructions for sending documents.
Does applying guarantee assistance?
No. An application does not guarantee assistance. Awards depend on eligibility, documentation, and available funds.
Can the Foundation help in an emergency?
The Foundation cannot provide emergency assistance outside its monthly review. For urgent local help with housing, utilities, or food, call 211. For a medical emergency, call 911.
Can a donor support a particular applicant?
Donors may support the program by selecting the Financial Assistance Program fund on the Foundation's official donation page. The Foundation selects recipients under its own criteria. A gift cannot be directed to a particular person.
